The Gatesville State School for Boys

The Gatesville State School for Boys or simply gatesville was a word that conjured up bad thoughts in the hearts and minds of boys all over Texas. A facility in an area of Texas with a 120 year history of perpetrating crimes of physical, sexual, mental and verbal abuse on the throw away kids of Texas. This blog is here to share the state boys story. c/s

Some things never change at TYC/TJJD except the name

A survey of kids posted at the Grits for Breakfast blog said85% of youth housed at the Giddings State School have been in a fight since they arrived. Giddings State School went from a boys home in the 70’s to become TYC’s secure facility when Gatesville closed. The “Mountain View” boys were moved to occupy the closed Hackberry School in the summer of 1975 and in 1979 were moved to Giddings.

The article goes on to note that the biggest concerns among the kids besides getting into a fight are negative interactions with staff.  Staff has negative attitudes towards the kids, there’s shocking news! Weren’t these the same root issues that culminated in Morales verse Turman and the reshuffling of inventory at the states Gatesville facility?

It was the inventory shuffling done by the state of Texas that has allowed the people of Gatesville to continue to profit from the misery of others.  Only now Gatesville’s shadenfreude, its business as usual inventory is women instead of boys. The TYC staff has been bitter ever since the federal government told them they couldn’t beat a state boy any longer. This bitterness is part of the TYC/TJJD ingrained culture like covering up abuses.

The article closes noting that the survey was a wake up call to leadership. You would think that if the leadership hasn’t been “woke up” to this news by now they must be in a coma.

  1. The TJJD/TYC "leadership" IS in a self-induced coma... and the youth are putting the floor JCO's in comas by beating up on them without consequence. I'll say it here, I'll say it on my own website, I'll say it on the Grits For Breakfast blog -- things at the Giddings State School are in meltdown mode and need to be changed before someone is KILLED.

As bad as conditions are for the youth, unless staff feel they can work there with some degree of safety, the facility will continue to lose veteran staff, to the detriment of ALL.

  3. I was in gatesville 1970-71 11 months. I witness a boy being beat with the butt of a bullwhip by one of the horse riders, All he did was when he saw them come by the dorm window, he made a statement look there"s john wayne . The bull then rode his horse into dorm and then proceeded to beat the hell out of the boy. Another bull at random will pick a boy out, bend him over with the boys head between his legs and would slam his fist across their kidneys many time causing the boy to pass out, Then call them a pussy and laugh . All this was done in full view and many times in lunch room for all to see. Gatesville is a hell hole' . The state of texas closed this place because the federal government forced them to by court order.

  4. fortunately I could read the expressions on these ex correctional officers face , but not all the time , see in the late 1960s they could give you extra duty kind of like in the army , but much worse , they'd give 10 , 20, 40 hours of extra duty shinning the floors in the front offices where the supervisors usually stayed , there you would be for three or four hours on a Friday night shinning the fricking floorwith just two rags , on your knees , and youd have to maintain a speed and ke moving to avoid a hard slap on the back , azzoles what stupid senseless punishment , and then again have to go to a com mittee to get to go back in the general population, or the school you were at , I did make friends with two Men in the lock-up was old mr. Moses Johnson,,,, and Mr. Cupps . hell he used to let me have a smoke just before wed hit the bunks in lockup, he wasn't bad , he eventually became a Deputy sheriff in Gatesville I saw Mr.cupps one time at the Reception center,,, he said hi to me , he also was holstering I big cowboy type pistol...hanging real low. and that's just one of my nightmares , not all bad .
